Evaluation questions

When you evaluate your work you must make sure you answer the following questions.

Links-a-plenty

Before we get onto todays stuff Ive added a hyperlink to a very informative slide show on music video concepts, If you want to know a bit more about music videos and the theory behind them have a read of the information at the link below.

http://www.scribd.com/doc/16434153/Music-Video-Concepts

Also while im wholesale ripping off the work of other people here is a handy link to another online presentation on analysing a dvd cover, some of the later pages wont be of help to you, however the way they decode the dvd covers in this can be applied to your digi pac research.

http://13a2chfs.blogspot.com/2009/09/dvd-conventions-lesson-notes-analysiing.html

The next gem of a find is from the same blog. This post has links to all the final A2 blogs of the schools students, I suggest you have a look at what they have been doing.

The final link ive got for you is a little presentation on the magazine and digipac cover, If included it because there is one slide on the magazine ad analysis, if your doing a magazine add have a look at some of the things it says need to be in your design. (its page 4 you need to look at)
http://13a2chfs.blogspot.com/2009/11/year-13-magazine-and-dvd-ancillary.html

Ok thats all that stuff out the way

Here's your next task!

if you have completed your 3 rough designs for your digi-pac, magazine ad, or website you need to get your final designs made up.

I suggest you let me or mr Smith see your 3 roughs and which one you want to take forward to a finished product so we can give some design hints and tips about how you can achieve the best finished product.

Firstly you need to be getting a schedule of what your going to do for your practical work posted up on your blog, this will let you hit some of the key marking criteria. Ive pinched a schedule from one of other students blogs, obviously you might want to lay your schedule out slightly differently which is fine but for now have a look see and get doing something.

Drafting your Digi pack, poster or Website

What Needs to be done ASAP.

You need to get your own blogs set up as soon as possible and let me have the web addresses for them.
Once you have set your blog up to get all of your research work from this year up on it as soon as possible.

Ive paste'd in the OCR top band mark criteria below, I'm going to add in some annotations in italics to show how you can ensure that you meet all of the exam criteria.

Mark Criteria for your practical task

Level 4 16–20 marks

There is excellent research into similar products and a potential target audience.
this will include all the work you have done before christmas with me and Mr Smith. Also last weeks home work task will help meet the requirements of this part of the course. you MUST keep talking about audiences and how they are being targetted.

There is excellent organisation of actors, locations, costumes or props.
You need to post a schedule of your filming and also the deadlines that you set for your Digi pac, poster or website designs and finished peices.
When you do film something mention on your blog that you have been filming, get a few digital photos from behind the scenes and include a list showing props and actors etc... and put the storyboard up of the bit you were filming.

There is excellent work on shotlists, layouts, drafting, scripting or storyboarding.
this will partly be covered by my suggestions above, just ensure you script and plan everything and put it on the blog, if you have drafted something put a few words down on how it will appeal to your audience.

Time management is excellent.
If you have done the stuff above already then you will have shown this!

There is an excellent level of care in the presentation of the research and planning.
this one is obvious, make your work look good, annotate rough drafts to explain what they show and your intentions, be professional.

There is excellent skill in the use of digital technology or ICT in the presentation.
To evidence this get screen grabs showing you using photoshop etc.., and explain the stages you go through. this doesn't have to be a step by step guide to what you did, just explain the main design choices and why you made them (your reason should pretty much always link to your target audience)

There are excellent communication skills.
this goes without saying, no text speak! and explain things clearly and in detail.

Todays tasks

  • If not all ready done get your blog set up and the address sent to me.

  • Draft out on paper rough designs for either your band website, Digi pac or poster. 3 designs for each should be enough. (I know I keep saying this but mention potential audience and use key media terms and theories, the uses and gratifications model is always good)
  • Evaluate your designs and choose the ones which you will take forward to a finished peice.
if you are designing a digipac the address below will let you download templates to work on to.

A2 G324: Advanced Portfolio in Media

For those of you who wish to read up on this qualification you can follow the below link to the exam boards specification for your course:

http://ocr.org.uk/qualifications/type/gce/amlw/media_studies/index.aspx

pg 29 onwards is the section I will be focusing on with you in my sessions.

There are two main areas I will be working you through.

Part 1 is your actual practical task, can I draw your attention to the additional tasks, these may not be things you are aware of yet.

I've copied the brief from the specification below. You will see that there are 3 potential secondary tasks that you must complete. You need to choose 2 of them to work on in my sessions.

1. A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the following three options:

a website homepage for the band;

a cover for its release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD package);

Whats a digipak? below is an animated example.

http://www.mediaheaven.co.uk/animations/DP1402.swf

a magazine advertisement for the digipak (CD/DVD package).

In Part 2 I will be covering the electronic presentation of your research planning and evaluation.

Your electronic presentation will be more than just a written blog account of what you did you must include audio and video work as well as the written parts.
Im especially keen for you to try and come up with creative ways to present your evaluation.

I have put together a collection of the mark criteria for your practical project as a word document. It is saved in Resources>Media studies > Year13 >Practical> Mark Criteria

Please take the time to look at it, if you follow it you WILL get a high grade

Ok enough Talk its time to get working!

your objectives for today are:

1. Read the mark criteria, and ask me if any of it doesnt make sense to you (it doesnt always make sense to us teachers at first! so dont be shy!)

2. Get your blog set up. this can be a bit of a long process so may over run into next week.

3.Brainstorm! you need to brainstorm ideas for your CD cover and magazine advert. I suggest using the following media key themes as starting points.
  • Genre

  • Audience

  • Representation

  • Institution

  • Codes and conventions

4. Deadline task for next week.

bring in examples of CD covers and magazine advertisements related to bands and CD/DVD selling you need to analyse the following things about each of your examples.

  • Use of ICT

  • Use of Conventions of layout and page design

  • Variety in fonts and text size

  • Use of language and register

  • integration of illustration and text

  • framing of shots, including or excluding elements

  • use of a variety of shot distances

  • Mise-en-scene (colour, figure, lighting, objects)

  • Image manipulation

If you cover all of the above in detail you are well on the way to getting top marks.bring in examples to the next session, I expect no less than 3 of each type.
